The Tanjung Langsat Port is set to become a biodiesel hub not only in the country but also internationally, under the Iskandar Development Region (IDR). Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui said the port's strategic location was important to the future plans of the biofuel and biodiesel industry, as it would allow for the sistematic tapping of the world market. "Tanjung Langsat is in a strategic position to tap not only the crude palm oil supply that is available in the peninsula area, but also the feedstock that comes from the Sumatera area in Indonesia," he said after a high-powered meeting with the state government. He said the jetty at the port was also able to handle shipment to global markets in Europe and the United States. Chin said he believed that the ambitious plans hd the capacity to take the quite easily as the state's highly developed port system ensured that the state did not have to do anything to attract shipping vessels into its waters. "This is a very exciting development under the IDR." "It is just a matter of putting emphasis on ensuring that the supporting infrastructure is available and getting companies to site their biodiesel and biofuel installations in that area." he said. Welcoming the specially designated 404.6ha area reserved next to the port for the biofuel industry, Chin said the ministry was ready to help the state facilitate the development of the Tanjung Langsat port area. The ministry also handed over a cheque for RM105,380 to the state flood disaster fund. Meanwhile, there are also plans to develop 36,421.7ha of land in the state for planted forests to overcome the problem of importing timber, particularly for the furniture industry. |
